2 May 2023 - North of Aleppo - Shehba Region

What is the New Medicine?
Why is mental health important in society?
Why is psychosocial support important for communities that have suffered war, displacement and genocide?
What is the role of doctors and medical personnel in improving the psychological and mental status of displaced people in Shehba?
All these important questions were discussed in a very rich workshop in the northern countryside of Aleppo in the Shehba area, which is home to hundreds people displaced from Afrin.
ACES was hosted by the heroes of Afrin Hospital, from administrators to doctors and nurses who work day and night to serve the internally displaced people of Afrin. Professor Bonnie Miller, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a specialist in the field of mental health, who is the main trainer of ACES, participated via Zoom from Washington DC.
The discussions took place interactively, from raising hands to expressing opinions to working in small groups to address the psychological, social and mental health needs of the community in Shehba.
The important role of doctors in adopting mind-body techniques to help patients instead of immediately prescribing medications was noted. Doctors confirmed that the origin of some physical diseases stems from mental disorders such as anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and pressures experienced by the displaced person.

20 April 2023 - Tal Tamir - al-Hasakah

In cooperation with Assyrian civil society, ACES held a very fruitful workshop in Tal Tamir.
The workshop was attended by influential Assyrian community leaders who expressed their happiness with the existence of an organization such as ACES that cares about the mental health of communities that have suffered from conflict and displacement.
The workshop was joined from Washington DC by Professor of Psychology and Social Work, Chief Trainer of ACES, Bonnie Miller.
Bonnie spoke about the importance of mental health and the need to provide psychosocial support to restore psychological security, self-confidence, and a sense of control over problems after all the suffering and pain experienced by the people of the region as a result of war, and most importantly to restore balance and find and increase strengths in individuals and communities.
The participants expressed their opinions and feelings openly and stressed the following:
The predominantly Assyrian villages and towns of Nahr al-Khabur suffered massacres and brutal attacks during the attempt by ISIS to take control of the area. Thirty-three Assyrian villages on the banks of the Khabur River were destroyed and Assyrians were forcibly displaced from their lands. The Assyrian community suffers from a very difficult psychological and financial situation after these crises.
Psychologically, there is constant anxiety and fear of repeated future attacks, and many Assyrians are in a state of sadness due to the distance from their villages and the loss of their children and churches during the war, which causes them painful memories.
The participants stressed the importance of holding such workshops that address the roots of social and psychological problems, how to restore human strength, and the need to build resilience and coping techniques to overcome negative emotions to move towards positive emotions.
